Learn how to throw on the pottery wheels! Wheel throwing is a fun and exciting medium for children to create functional artwork. After learning how to center the clay, build the floor of the pot, and pull the walls, students will experiment with building bowls, altering the form, and more.
All pieces will be fired and glazed with dinnerware safe glazes -- suitable for eating or drinking out of, or putting into the dishwasher and microwave. Pieces will be sent home throughout the semester, though our final pieces will be glazed during the last class and ready for pick up 2 weeks later.
ADDITIONAL DETAILS & FAQS
About Pottery Classes: We're thrilled you're interested in a pottery class at Tinker! Wheel throwing is a wonderful skill for children to learn and practice. Through the process of the wheel spinning and using our hands in wet clay to form vessels, we find that throwing on the pottery wheels is just the right mix a meditative process and new challenge for children. Most children get very hooked on throwing after just a couple of classes!
Class Options: We offer three classes of Wheel Throwing 1 and one class of Continuing Wheel Throwing.
Which class should my child take?: If your child is throwing for the first time, or if your child has taken Wheel Throwing 1 only but it has been over about 1.5-2 years since their class, they should take Wheel Throwing 1. If your child has taken Wheel Throwing 1 within the last 1 - 1.5 years, or if they’ve ever taken Continuing Wheel with us at Tinker, they are welcome to join one of our Continuing Wheel Throwing classes.
Class Structure: As we have 5 student pottery wheels and classes are limited to 6 students, each child works on their own wheel, which allows the children to work at their own pace in an independent fashion. Therefore, this class is very conducive to children who are working at different levels to benefit from others in their class, and to continue advancing their skills at their own pace through teacher support and mini-lessons tailored to the individual's and group's needs.
Please Note: If you are signing up with friends, we recommend communicating in advance about which class option you are interested in joining so that your students get into the same class. Please reach out to us at tinker@tinkerartstudio.com if you have any questions or if we may be of further help in any way.
Notes
Sibling Discount: We offer a multi-class discount for our semester-based children’s & teen classes when you register for 2 or more classes in the same session (i.e. Spring 2022). The discount will automatically apply at checkout.
