Summer Learning SPREE (at home)!

*The event has already taken place on this date: Fri, 07/10/2020
We are excited to launch Summer Learning SPREE, an at-home, 5 week “camp program” that will include grade-specific missions from our beloved SPREE Beaver Mascot, Chompers! Each week will include a unique mission that gets your child outdoors, short videos of nature crafts and activities, and live video sessions with SPREE Educators. This program is being offered exclusively in 2020 in response to the realities of the COVID-19 pandemic and the cancellation of our traditional summer camp programs.

Please help us keep this calendar up to date! If this activity is sold out, canceled, or otherwise needs alteration, email mindy@kidsoutandabout.com so we can update it immediately. If you have a question about the activity itself, please contact the organization administrator listed below.

Children that sign up will become Special Agents in the SPREE Force, helping Chompers (the Chief SPREE Force Special Agent) keep the South Platte River safe and clean. Each week Chompers will send your child a mission that encourages outdoor exploration, creativity, and critical thinking. Every mission builds upon the last, taking your child through the process of discovery, building knowledge and skills, and taking action on the following themes:

Program Name: Entering Kindergarten_ Operation Backyard Nature

Description:  Nature is all around us all the time, even in the city! This program will lead students through their natural curiosity to explore and engage with nature close to where they live. At the end of our 5 weeks, your camper will be more aware of animals outside, and how to be respectful and responsible when on outdoor adventures.

Program Name: Entering 1st Grade_ Operation Get Outside

Description: How much of your day is spent outside? Do you ever wish you could spend more time in the sunshine? Well, Agent Chompers - Chief SPREE Force Special Agent - is ready to train you in skills - like observation, investigation, creative thinking, and more - that will allow you to experience your outdoor spaces in a way you never have before!

Program Name: Entering 2nd Grade_ Operation Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Description: What happens to a granola bar wrapper when it gets tossed away? What about a banana peel? A soda can? While all these items may end up in the same landfill, they don’t have to! Join SPREE as we tackle conservation where you live. Each week, Chompers will send a mission that encourages critical thinking, creativity & problem solving. By the end of the summer, you will develop a personalized plan to reduce household waste!

Program Name: Entering 3rd Grade_ Operation Water Conservation

Description: The water cycle is continually in motion recycling water on earth to the sky and back on earth in the form of precipitation- rain, snow, and hail. It is this element, water, that is necessary for all forms of life. But how much water actually falls in Denver? How much water is available for people to use? How much do you use each day? Answer these questions and more, as we guide you through the steps to develop a water conservation plan for where you live!

Program Name: Entering 4th Grade_ Operation Energy Investigation

Description: Electrical, natural gas, solar, wind, and more! There is so much happening in Colorado around energy. This program will lead students through energy exploration and the development of an energy action plan where they live. Don’t let summer get static, join SPREE for challenges and experiments that get you moving and thinking!

Program Name: Entering 5th Grade_ Operation Pollution Solution

Description: Where does water end up after it falls from the sky? Why don’t our streets fill with water when it rains? What is a storm drain? Operation Pollution Solution will use the scientific & engineering processes to engage students with the urban water cycle. Using knowledge gained over the 5 week program, campers will develop a plan to help keep trash out of our City’s creeks and rivers! Our waterways need the creative solutions that only you can implement!

By completing each mission, your child will earn special edition Chompers cards celebrating the work they have accomplished.

In addition to the missions, each week your child will receive a short video of a related craft or activity that can be done from home and have the opportunity to interact with a SPREE Educator through a live stream presentation on topics related to South Platte River nature.
