Summer Drawing + Painting Club: 1st-5th grade
Please help us keep this calendar up to date! If this activity is sold out, canceled, or otherwise needs alteration, email mindy@kidsoutandabout.com so we can update it immediately. If you have a question about the activity itself, please contact the organization administrator listed below.
This 5-day, 3 hour per day course is designed for kids who love to draw or paint and want to practice techniques, tips, tricks, and ideas wherever they may be. Think of it as a place to practice foundational skills in a fun, supportive environment with other kids who are serious about improving drawing or painting skills. This is a great intro to our Drawing + Painting courses offered during the school year.
Students will be challenged to look at the world around them for inspiration, try new things, take risks, and make mistakes. The focus will be on learning drawing and painting materials including sketch pencils, colored pencils, art markers, micron pens, pastels, watercolor, or paint. Everyone will be encouraged to try a variety of media, but will be allowed to choose a focus in their favorite by mid-week. Choice in subject matter will also be allowed, honoring what inspires each artist, and encouraging unique and meaningful ideas from real life or from imagination.
We will also talk about drawing from observation, perspective, space, and composition. More advanced students are still welcome because we know sometimes just carving out the time and being around a supportive group or hearing these lessons from a different instructor can be very valuable. We will meet students where they are with skills when working 1:1, always allowing choice in subject matter, but will teach group lessons that focus on the basics of drawing, how to use tools, and apply techniques to the subject matter the kids are inspired by. We believe kids are more likely to advance skills and explore outside their comfort zone when surrounded by other kids with a common interest, and in a supportive environment.
artSPARK provides an atmosphere of respect, and not only teaches kids how to approach drawing, but also teaches how to engage with other artists, collaborate, and talk about art.
- These are not mixed media classes and do not offer options to use the whole studio.
- Every child will get a FREE sketchbook! (we call them Idea + Mistake books)
Class Requirements
- Please check the grade requirements for this offering and enroll in the age group your child will be entering in the Fall. We are sorry, but we will not be able to make exceptions for Kindergarten students and/or siblings to join this camp even if they are 6. Students MUST be going into 1st grade in the Fall. Most that are starting 5th grade are ready for the older age group where we will be working with more technical skills. Thank you for understanding.
