Hands-on History: Child Care and Learning Support

This fall, History Colorado Center will offer child care for children ages 6-12 at our museum to accommodate working families as schools return to fully remote learning. Care includes supporting children with their individual remote learning, healthy snacks, enrichment programs, outdoor time and self-care activities before and after online learning sessions. Full day and half day options available.

WHO: Denver area students ages 6-12
WHERE: The History Colorado Center, 1200 Broadway
WHEN: Session I starts August 24 through October 16. 
Half-Day 8:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. 
Full-Day 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
COST: $125/week half day  |  $250/week full day

Home Quest with Renaissance Adventures
Adventure Quest with Renaissance Adventures

Renaissance Adventures brings adventure-filled, story-based, role-playing quests right to you! Invite your friends, or learning pod to a Mythical Quest at your location at a time that works for you! Each child/teen chooses a character with unique strengths to play as they adventure together through a mythical land full of mystery and intrigue. Together, kids read treasure maps, solve puzzling riddles, make difficult choices, and battle foes on a mission to save the kingdom in a non-competitive environment where everyone gets to be the hero. Renaissance Adventures has been pioneering innovative experiential education since 1995. 

Home Quests can be just for children or teens, or you can have us lead a Family Quest for mixed-ages, to involve parents, kids, and even grandparents in the adventure! 

Available Programs: Adventure Quest, Star Quest, Quest & Quill, Dungeon Delvers Tabletop RPG for Ages: 6-17. Location:  Boulder Country and the greater metro Denver area. Participants: Minimum of 4, Maximum of 6 per group.

Mixed Media Portraits | Ages 8-10

In this mixed media portrait class, we will focus on finding your personal creative voice. Appropriate for novice and experienced creators who have a passion for beauty, whimsy, and the unusual. We will use reference photos to guide us, but we are not copying the photo! We will cover feature placement, proportions, value, and learn to layer different materials to achieve interesting color combinations, textures, and expressions.

Expressive Portraits | Ages 14-17

From start to finish we will learn the foundations of portrait painting. Appropriate for novice and experienced creators who have a passion for beauty, whimsy, and the unusual. Preferred medium is oil paint, but acrylic is acceptable.

Reductive Painting | Ages 14-17
Art Students League of Denver

In this class we will build our initial layers using stencils and lace to create colorful patterns. We will proceed to cover the initial layers with paint, and use reductive techniques to unearth desired forms. Each student’s work will be unique and unexpected! Learn different spray paint techniques, and use alternative tools to remove paint in order to create the desired effect. Set aside common tools and methods of creating in order to explore new possibilities! Respirators highly recommended.

Let's Art! Saturday mornings are mornings for making! We will create imaginative multi-media art projects that are skill based and inspired by artists, art history and other cultures. We will create Masks, sculptures, puppets. We will draw, paint, sew, sculpt, print and assemble masterpieces. Come Play With US!!
We break for snack. Please bring a snack, wear oldish clothes and get ready to play and get creative!

Drawing Techniques | Ages 8-10

If you crave more information about how to improve your drawing, then this class is for you. Learn to draw faces, figures, animals, still-life and more! Explore various ways of drawing and shading with the use of reference photos and objects. Practice disengaging your perfectionist side and welcome "mistakes" as part of the process. In this class we focus on observational drawing skills, and inspiring individual creativity with fun illustration prompts.

Maïa Tarassoff started Petit Architect in 2017, with the mandate to make architecture more accessible to children and youth and inspire them to become educated citizens involved in their cities. She teaches fun, hands-on after-school programs and intervenes in schools, for all ages ranging from Kindergarten to Grade 12. Her curriculum is focused on sustainability, social impact and energy efficiency. In parallel, she continues to work as a passive house and interior designer.

Hang onto your hats, this hike will be blowing in a Senior Meteorologist Major from Metro State of Denver! Kaylee Reynolds, a storm chaser and broadcaster of weekly weather reports at Met Media, will be bringing in a "front" of info about how weather reports at Roxborough State Park, our time spent outdoors, and more! Join Naturalist Sally Anderson for this "right as rain" time! Geared for ages 7-12.
