In today’s world of dissonance and conflict, the power of creativity inherent in music can provide balm and respite. This is the strong belief of the young players of the celebrated Calidore String Quartet, making their debut performance on Friends of Chamber’s Music’s 65th Season, Wednesday, November 7, 7:30 p.m. The concert will be presented in Gates Concert Hall at the Newman Center for the Performing Arts, 2344 E. Iliff Ave., Denver.
The Calidore String Quartet is a recent Avery Fisher Career Grant and Lincoln Center Emerging Artist Award recipient, and Grand Prize winner of the University of Michigan’s inaugural M-Prize International Chamber Music Competition (2016). The multi-award-winning ensemble is based in New York and is already recognized as one of America’s foremost quartets.
The Calidore’s Denver program will feature works, according to the quartet, that send a message of hope, “illuminating the human potential to create beauty, even in the darkest of circumstances.” The program will include works by Beethoven and Haydn, as well as Mendelssohn’s Quartet in A Minor, Op. 13, no. 2, “Ist es Wahr?” and Golijov’s "Tenebrae."
Osvaldo Golijov’s "Tenebrae" has a special connection to Friends of Chamber Music. The string quartet version of the work was commissioned for the Kronos Quartet by the family of Ann C. Levy, a long-time Friends of Chamber Music patron and board member. The work was commissioned in Ann’s honor on the occasion of FCM's 50th anniversary. The premiere was held on October 15, 2003 as the culmination of a successful anniversary fundraising effort for Friends of Chamber Music.
Tickets: Single tickets are available at friendsofchambermusic.com or by calling the Newman Center Box Office at 303-871-7720. $40 for adults; $10 for ages 30 and under.
