Kids at Discovery Camp have the opportunity to try a wide range of outdoor activities with a focus on learning and fun—not on competition or ability. All activities take place on the spacious High Peaks/BCSIS Elementary campus. Here are some examples:
Rock Climbing: Kids learn the ins and outs of rock climbing techniques, precautions and equipment, and practice climbing on our 25-foot mobile rock wall. Learn about how we focus on the safety of our small climbers here.- Canoeing and Kayaking: Our 15,000-gallon mobile kayak demonstration tank brings the open water to your kids in a non-intimidating, safety-focused experience. It gives them the chance to try out boats, paddles and personal flotation devices (PFDs), all in only two feet of water.
- Biking: Avid4 Adventure’s fleet of strider and 12-inch-wheel bikes can accommodate kids of any size (although you can bring your own bike if you prefer). We work with kids of all ability levels, from those who can’t ride without staff assistance to proficient riders. We also help those who are still on training wheels to start riding on two wheels. Kids learn about technique, safety and biking equipment
- Exploring: Kids go on short hikes where they learn about flora and fauna, do some bug and butterfly catching, use magnifying glasses to get a closer look at their surroundings, learn about Leave No Trace and create nature-inspired art projects.
Throughout the week, in every activity, campers also learn the principles of Leave No Trace, building awareness, appreciation and respect for the outdoors.
- Storytime Yoga: Kids learn about health and their bodies, exploring yoga poses, breathing exercises and creative relaxation techniques. They also learn lessons in self-expression, social skills, positive thinking and environmental awareness. Alive with animal imagery, music and storytelling, our storytime yoga teaches lifelong techniques for staying flexible and balanced, both physically and emotionally.
- Art: Our art classes are designed to develop and strengthen kids’ creative skills, stimulate their imaginations, and encourage self-expression through playful, age-appropriate activities. Kids will learn to work with new materials, try different techniques and discover a variety of mediums, including painting, drawing and mixed media. They’ll have the opportunity to work independently and in groups, with a balance of structured guidance and creative freedom.
- Music and Movement: This interactive class introduces kids to an extensive sampling of world music ranging from African percussion to Celtic harp to American folk, classical, jazz, funk, opera, rock and bluegrass. Kids use their bodies and voices to connect to the language of music, plus learn good listening skills and how to cooperate in a supportive group environment.
