Denver Explorer Camp

*The event has already taken place on this date: Fri, 08/19/2016
Explorer Camp balances half a day of our signature activities-climbing, canoeing, kayaking, biking, and hiking with a half-day activity of yoga, art or music.

Please help us keep this calendar up to date! If this activity is sold out, canceled, or otherwise needs alteration, email mindy@kidsoutandabout.com so we can update it immediately. If you have a question about the activity itself, please contact the organization administrator listed below.

The result is a well-rounded mix of outdoor adventure and creative expression with something new to learn every day.

Under the guidance of our world-class staff, our K – 1st grade campers can explore the world around them in a safety-focused environment designed to teach new skills, foster friendships and instill a lifetime love of the outdoors.

Kids in Explorer Camp have the opportunity to try a wide range of outdoor activities with a focus on learning and fun—not on competition or ability. All activities take place on campus or nearby at beautiful outdoor destinations (within 20 minutes of camp). Here are some examples:

  • Rock Climbing
Kids practice climbing on campus on our 25-foot mobile rock wall, while learning the ins and outs of rock climbing techniques, precautions and equipment
  • Canoeing and Kayaking: Our flat-water instruction at the Boulder Reservoir helps kids incrementally develop comfort with their equipment and environment. They practice paddling techniques and water safety.
  • Mountain BikingAvid4 Adventure’s fleet of mountain bikes can accommodate kids of any size (although you can bring your own bike if you prefer). We work with kids of all ability levels, from those who can’t ride without staff assistance to proficient riders. We also help those who are still on training wheels to start riding on two wheels. Kids learn about technique, safety and equipment, as well as some basics of bicycle maintenance.
  • ExploringKids go on short hikes where they learn about flora and fauna, play nature inspired games and learn about Leave No Trace

Throughout the week, in every activity, campers also learn the principles of Leave No Trace, building awareness, appreciation and respect for the outdoors.

We balance our adventure activities with some creative pursuits led by specialist teachers for a well-rounded camp experience. Here are some examples:

  • Storytime Yoga:
Kids learn from a yoga instructor about health and their bodies, exploring yoga poses, breathing exercises and creative relaxation techniques. They also learn lessons in self-expression, social skills, positive thinking and environmental awareness. Alive with animal imagery, music and storytelling, our storytime yoga teaches lifelong techniques for staying flexible and balanced, both physically and emotionally.
  • Art: Our art classes are led by an art teacher and designed to develop and strengthen kids’ creative skills, stimulate their imaginations, and encourage self-expression through playful, age-appropriate activities. Kids will learn to work with new materials, try different techniques and discover a variety of mediums, including painting, drawing and mixed media. They’ll have the opportunity to work independently and in groups, with a balance of structured guidance and creative freedom.
  • Music and Movement: In this interactive class, a music instructor introduces kids to an extensive sampling of world music ranging from African percussion to Celtic harp to American folk, classical, jazz, funk, opera, rock and bluegrass. Kids use their bodies and voices to connect to the language of music, plus learn good listening skills and how to cooperate in a supportive group environment.
