Halloween gives each of us the opportunity to step into the role of another: superheroes and villains, ghosts and ghouls, royalty, our favorite animals – both real and imaginary – and everything in between. From the simple to the elaborate, we don masks and costumes that disguise us and allow us to step into the role of someone, or something, completely different.

But we’re not the only animals that exhibit such behavior. Invertebrates around the world use their own masks – camouflage – to disguise their appearance. But for them, the stakes are much higher. They adorn lavish patterns and colors to stand out from the crowd and startle would-be predators, or complex disguises to remain unseen, concealing their true location, identity or movements to escape their enemies or sneakily approach their prey.
